5 Ways to Help the Environment

February 8, 2022

Together We Can Help Save the Environment

1. Conserve Energy

  • Replacing conventional lighting with CFLs, LEDs, or other  energy-efficient lighting options helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions (and they last longer than traditional lighting products)
  • Click here to see which choice is best for your lighting needs.
  • Click here to see how we can help with your LED consulting needs.
  • Look for Energy Star-rated products.
  • Turn lights and unplug appliances as well as any other energy-consuming products when not in use.
  • Smart technology products for your home or commercial building, such as smart thermostats, can allow for analyzing energy consumption and controlling energy usage behaviors at home.
  • Seal any windows or doors that may be leaking air or causing drafts.
  • Check out our blog post on how to save on your utility bills during winter and in general

2. Recycle or Re-use

  • According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, there are many benefits to recycling properly, for people and the environment.
  • The keyword is properly, as many products that are assumed to be recyclable, need additional checks and balances, prior to being recycled.  If not handled properly, products still end up in landfills, which defeats the purpose of trying to better the environment and ultimately creates more waste– so it’s best to make sure that materials are properly disposed of, according to the label.
  • Recycling helps recreate jobs (hundreds of thousands of jobs are recycling-related and account for over 600,00 jobs, according to the U.S. EPA’s most recent Recycling Economic Information Report.
  • Recycling reduces waste and saves energy when done correctly.

Buy Locally Sourced, Fresh Food

  • Food bought at grocery stores often reaches their destination after much travel.  Buying from local farmers' markets or within your local community, allows for fewer miles being traveled and thus, reduces carbon footprint, fuel use, and air contamination.
  • Locally sourced food options are normally fresher and contain fewer pesticides and/or contaminants than their non-local or even international counterparts.
  • Wildlife, land, and local food producers are protected with the income generated and typically practice in more humane and eco-friendly ways than big-box production companies.

Find Eco-Friendly Ways to Travel

  • Engine pollution is harmful to health and to the environment.  Here is some background as to why and how to reduce pollution created from vehicles.
  • Walk or bike, when possible.
  • Use a battery-powered or rechargeable, fuel-efficient mode of transportation, such as an electric scooter if walking or biking aren’t viable options.

Conserve Water

  • Energy demands can be lowered drastically, even by utilizing methods to save water, alone.
  • Save water indoors by following some of these easy steps:
  • Use cold water, instead of hot, for laundry purposes and only wash full loads, when needed.
  • Upgrade appliances to Energy Star-rated products.
  • Take shorter showers–or showers instead of baths.
  • Turn off water from the faucet, when not in use.
  • Purchase products that have the Water-Sense Label.
  • Check out this infographic and the breakdown of water use by the EPA.

Although there are many ways to help improve our behaviors toward the environment, this list was just a brief overview of some of the easiest ways to start today.
