Are Your A Business Owner Looking to Change Energy Suppliers in Illinois?

Step 1: Identify Which Commercial Electricity Provider You Want to Change

Your lights are on but who is your electricity provider? Assess your current situation by checking the following:

  • Do you have a current energy agreement in place with a retail electricity provider?
  • If so, you will see a supplier company name listed in the Electricity Supply Services or Electric Supply section, noted above.
  • If the agreement is a fixed, all-in agreement, the invoice each month, should reflect the same rate on the Electric Supply line item (or in its own supply charge-related section) each month, until the agreement expires.
  • You could still have an agreement, but with a variable, month-to-month rate, which would show in the same line item as above, but the rate varies each month, depending on the market-based electric rate in your state.

  • Are you paying a variable rate each month with the local utility company?
  • If so, you won’t see a supplier company name or consistent fixed all-in rate under the Electricity Supply Services or Electric Supply section of your bill.

Step 2: Compare Business Electricity Rates by Provider

When shopping for a new electricity supplier, you will need to figure out your Price to Compare. This number can be found on the current electricity bill for your business.

You will then want to call a variety of suppliers to find the best energy rate that best fits your needs. You will want to negotiate your new rate, contract length, incentives, etc.

Step 3: Choose A New Electricity Supplier for your Business

Once you have read through all of the various contract terms and conditions from each commercial electricity provider, you’ll be ready to sign and secure your new electricity plan.

Your local electric utility will send you a confirmation of your new electricity supplier. You have seven days from the postmark date of their letter to make any adjustments.

With the maturity of the Illinois deregulation market, there are a number of competing electricity suppliers. We take a look at the best commercial energy providers in Illinois.
