How to Lower Electric Bill in Winter

January 13, 2022

Here are some ways to save on utility bills during the winter...starting with electricity

Tips On Ways to Save on Utility Bills this Winter

Winter is officially here and with that comes cold weather, lots of travel, spending time with your family, and unfortunately, higher utility bills, more specifically, electricity bills.

While energy bills can seem quite high during the winter, we at Ananta Energy Source, have compiled a list of tips to help lower your electric utility bill and hopefully reduce the stress that comes with the winter season. That way you can spend time with your loved ones and focus on what truly matters most; all the while save a little money! :)

  1. Check your home for drafts
  2. Regardless if your home is heated through electric, or natural gas, drafts can cause your power bill to spike. Drafts can come through openings in between window openings, doors, insulation, your attic, your chimney, and many places you may not have had the opportunity to look.  Thoroughly check for drafts because if they are present, you’re going to need more power to heat up the place; which will result in more usage and a higher utility bill.
  3. For rooms that aren’t consistently used, close off those spaces and their air vents, so that the warm air travels to the most predominantly used areas of your home. Make sure the lights aren’t left on in these uncommon areas well!
  4. Smart thermostat - being able to control the air temperature within your home, even while being away, will give you more control over how much energy is used.  A good rule of thumb is to set your smart thermostat to 68*F while you are in your home and keep it lower during the times that you are not.
  5. Ceiling fan direction - setting your ceiling fan to work clockwise during winter allows the cool air to be pulled upward and keeps the warm air lower to the ground.
  6. Let sunlight warm your home or add solar panels, which are usually a bit more expensive upfront but can lower your energy bill, exponentially.
  7. Use thermal curtains to keep warm air in your home and block drafts from entering your home/internal air from exiting.
  8. Unplug anything that uses energy, when not in use- this one may be obvious, but every little bit of energy saved adds up and can help you save.
  9. Wear warmer apparel during the colder months, rather than turning up the heat.
  10. For outdoor lighting look into LED lights to lower the overall consumption of power being used to light up your house during the nighttime. Also, make sure to use timers, so that on days you’re busy and forget to turn them off, the lights aren’t on during the day.
  11. For homes that have a wood burning fireplace, utilizing a fireplace during this holiday season can heat up your home significantly.
