Off-Peak Hours for Electricity Explained

Simply put, Off-peak electricity hours are when the demand for energy is at its lowest. At this time, the electricity rates are usually at their lowest throughout the day.

For example, in Texas, peak demand occurs in the busiest times of the day, typically from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. During these times the cost  for electricity is at its lowest for  Texas residents and business owners.

There are a few ways you can save money with off-peak electricity rates.

  1. For starters, unplugging appliances and electronics is one of the most common ways to start saving on your bills. Appliances that are plugged in but switched off can still drain your power. In some cases, this energy drain can account for 20% of your electric bill. Be mindful.
  2. Another way to save money on your bill is to program your thermostat. A smart thermostat can be a useful tool in programming temperature settings for each room.
  3. Changing your electricity use to lower-priced (off-peak) times of the day can also be a way to save, depending on your lifestyle.
  4.  Time-of-Use Rate Plans are available in many areas.  TOU rates  are  optional rates that allow for a customer to be billed based on on-peak and off-peaks periods of time. To find out more about TOU rates near you, give us a call.
