Texas Businesses Will Experience Electricity Rate Increases

texas commercial electricity rate changes

These charges are being applied to financially support ERCOT to get up to $3 billion in funds to help stabilize the wholesale market as a response to Winter Storm Uri. These price changes are something we can't control as your broker unfortunately. However, our energy consultant team is paying close attention to what effect these changes will have on your business and will be here for any of your questions and concerns.

Two types of charges added to your bill:

Default Securitization Charge 2: a non-bypassable charge that is effective in January 2022.

Uplift Securitization Charge 3: a non-bypassable charge, which will be effective in early Q2 2022.

How does it affect your business?

According to Direct Energy in a recent notice:

Securitization: Securitization charges are brand new charges associated with serving customers in Texas and therefore we will be passing these charges through to all customers.

Ancillary services obligation increase: If your agreement includes ancillary services as part of your energy price or as part of an adder, we will be passing through the difference between the cost of ancillaries that was built into your price or adder and the new increased cost to procure ancillary services on your behalf.** If your agreement passes ancillary services through, you may notice an increase in that line item.

What do I do from here?:

Unfortunately, there's not much any of us can do when it comes to the government changing the law and imposing state wide increases. Even though every supplier we work with locks in and will fix your rate for you, they each have a “governing change in law,” clause that allows them to increase their costs if the government decides to change laws regarding rates.

What we can do to help you is again, be here to answer questions or concerns you may have. Every supplier seems to be handling this change in law differently. As we learn of these differences, we will be making posts to inform you. For more questions on these increases and tariff changes, please feel free to contact your energy broker at Ananta, or contact us directly at
